Announcement: Publication of Early Years Teacher Degree Apprenticeship (EYTDA) Training Provider Guidance | |
The DfE is pleased to announce the publication of the EYTDA Provider Guidance, developed with a sector-led implementation group to support training providers in delivering high-quality apprenticeship programmes for early years professionals.
Recommended for HEIs, training providers and sector stakeholders, the EYTDA Provider Guidance details key requirements for apprenticeship delivery, covering:
· Eligibility · Programme structure · Mentoring · Assessments · Quality assurance · Compliance · Roles of providers and employers Training providers are expected to be ready to offer EYTDA apprenticeships from September 2026, although some may be ready earlier.

Bespoke employer guidance will also be published shortly to support organisations in understanding and implementing the new requirements effectively.

Publication of Experts and Mentors Programme Evaluation Report | |
We are delighted to announce publication of the Experts and Mentors Programme evaluation report! There were over 4,900 registrations for the programme, which supported early years settings and childminders to overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19 and provide high-quality provision for all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. It provided personalised coaching for leaders, guidance on best practices and teaching strategies and support to implement the 2021 EYFS framework. Additionally, the programme helped practitioners access the Early Years Child Development Training and offered advice and guidance on meeting the needs of children with English as an Additional Language or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Key Evaluation Findings: · A positive, statistically significant impact of the programme on practitioners’ confidence in supporting children’s personal, social and emotional development · Strong evidence that the programme had a positive impact on practitioners’ confidence in supporting children’s communication and language development, but this was not wholly conclusive. · The positive impact on both primary outcomes was larger among practitioners working in settings with higher levels of disadvantage. · Experts, mentors and area leads reported a range of improved outcomes including enhanced professional development and creating new networks. · Setting leaders and staff reported improved skills and knowledge and greater confidence. Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) nutrition guidance changes from September 2025 | |
The Department for Education is committed to ensuring that all children in early years settings have the best possible start in life. As part of this, we are introducing new nutrition guidance in the EYFS statutory framework, which will replace the ‘Examples menus for early years settings in England’ guidance from September 2025. The new guidance has been developed with nutrition and sector experts. It will help early years providers understand how to meet the existing EYFS requirement: ‘Where children are provided with meals, snacks and drinks, these must be healthy, balanced and nutritious’. Good nutrition in the early years is crucial for setting the foundations for a lifetime of good health. From September 2025, providers will be required to have regard to the new nutrition guidance, meaning they must take it into account and should follow it unless there is good reason not to. Learning about the 'outdoors' | |
Part of growing up is about expanding your horizons beyond your own home – travelling to other places like school, the houses of friends, or to parks and the outdoors. Children need to learn how to get there: about distance, directions and the new sensations they’ll encounter along the way. Good starting points are how we measure distances, how we might use directions to find the way, and the five senses of touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Stay One Step Ahead – Working with Small Steps Big Changes to develop an innovative home safety programme | |

Children should be safe in their homes. Yet, every year in England, around 370,000 children under five have an injury that requires a visit to a hospital. Roughly 40,000 will be admitted to hospital because of their injury, and sadly around 35 may die. It is even more distressing that injuries are more likely to occur in families living in the most disadvantaged areas.
Working with parents and practitioners involved in the Small Steps Big Changes (SSBC) programme in Nottingham, alongside the Child Accident Prevention Trust, a team based at The University of Nottingham developed an evidence-based standardised approach to home safety for families with children under three called ‘Stay One Step Ahead’ (SOSA).

Ahmed vs Captain Amazing! | |

Ben Kingston-Hughes is Managing Director of Inspired Children and has worked with vulnerable children across the UK for over 34 years.
In a case study published by the East Midlands Early Years Stronger Practice Hub, Ben describes working with a child exhibiting negative behaviour in a nursery setting and then in an after school club in his reception class.
The turning point for this child was the introduction of superhero themed activities, making costumes and transforming himself into “Captain Amazing” and spending his time in character helping others and being supportive.

EEF adds new approaches to their Early Years Evidence Store | |
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has added two new approaches – interactive writing and self-care – to their Early Years Evidence Store.
Interactive writing is an approach which can help develop children’s early literacy skills whilst supporting children to develop positive self-care routines helps their wellbeing, health and safety.
EEF’s Evidence Store brings together a number of evidence-informed approaches to help educators to understand and reflect on their practice. Each approach includes a summary of current evidence, practical examples of how the approach could be implemented in your setting and videos of the approach in action.
