New Do Something Big leaflet

Our new Do Something Big leaflet is now available for you to download and print, to support your recruitment activity.

This leaflet sets out the different ways to get started in the sector and demonstrates ways to build experience and progress a career in Early Years.

Get your copy

Download the leaflet here. You can also explore all our other information, which you can access on our Recruitment Resources page.

When printed, it should be folded twice to create a three-panel leaflet; so it will open out into three sections; a front cover, an inside spread, and a back panel.

For the best result, print at 100 per cent scale and make two vertical folds so it opens out into three sections. There is also a printers’ artwork version on the site.

If you need anything, please get in touch with the campaign team at: earlyyears.careers@education.gov.uk

Update on LA monthly payments

·  We have consistently heard from the childminding sector that termly entitlements payments can make it difficult for them to manage their businesses.

·  The Best Start in Life commitment announced in July 2025 said that “we will work with local authorities and others to ensure that, where they want to, childminders and other early years providers are paid monthly for the funded hours they provide, making their income more stable.”

Update

·  We wanted to update you that from October 2026, LAs must offer monthly payments to early years providers who request them, including childminders.

Get involved with the Early Years Settings National Year of Reading Offer!

The National Year of Reading is officially here! Take part by signing up to the official Early Years Settings offer, delivered by the National Literacy Trust.

Our Early Years spring term activity includes resources to help you make the most of storytelling in the every day, professional development webinars for educators and memorable events for children.

This spring, choose your level of involvement:

·  Option 1: Go All In (Whole setting approach)– Nominate a representative from your setting to register for our Learning Management System for a guided journey through termly activities – plus, take part in a participatory award with prizes.

·  Option 2: Dip In (Individual approach) – Sign up to individual events and download resources as they go live.

To do now:

1.  Decide your level of involvement and sign up: Go All In or Dip In

2.  Download our starter toolkit which includes a calendar and an all staff briefing presentation on the National Year of Reading

3.  Sign up to our All-Phase Introduction Webinar on 15 Jan to kick start 2026

Let’s make 2026 the year every child gets the best start through stories!

Share your apprentice success stories during National Apprenticeship Week 2026

The Do Something Big early years recruitment campaign is looking for case studies from a range of settings to spotlight during National Apprenticeship Week 2026.

We're searching for current apprentices who can speak authentically about what it's like to build a career in early years – people whose stories show just how rewarding and fulfilling a career in early years can be.

The communications opportunity could involve media interviews, being filmed for our social channels, or providing a quote. We'll work around what's convenient for your staff.

If any apprentices at your setting would be happy to share their career journey, tell us why they love working in early years, and help inspire others to join the profession, we'd love to hear from them.

To put someone forward, please contact Luke.Prescott@education.gov.uk.

New Ofsted report cards and grades video explainer: a guide for parents

We have heard from leaders that they would like support explaining our new grades and report cards to their parents. Our new YouTube video explainer has more information on exactly what Ofsted’s new grades mean, including how we report on safeguarding. Early years settings may find this helpful when explaining their grades and report cards to parents.
